Why We Have Insurance

When the house flood of 2010 was actually happening, I couldn’t breathe. I panicked, I cried, I imagined the tub falling through the floor like it does in the movies (and I don’t even have a tub in my bathroom). My beautiful wood floors, carpet and ceiling were all drenched – soaked with water and my brain totally forgot the concept of insurance. All I could think about was why did I try to save the $99 installation fee on my new faucet? Would have been cheaper than this destruction.

But we do have insurance, and it’s an amazing, wonderful thing in times like these. Yes, we did have a nice chunky deductible of $1,000, which I was willing to pay and ready for the hit. This was the first time I’ve ever had to file a home insurance claim. I was scared. I was worried they would blame it all on me, that they wouldn’t fix what was ruined.

But I was wrong.

After a couple of phone calls and discussions about the damages, my check arrived last week for new carpet, refinishing floors, fixing the ceiling and a couple of other minor things. And they just subtracted the deductible from what they owed me – which was awesome because I never had to pay that out of pocket!

So, off I went to Home Depot for new carpet. I know I wanted something soft (hubs has a bad foot and hates to walk on hard floor), something that wouldn’t show stains (yes my dog still pees on the carpet and we cannot get her to stop) and something that would last (current carpet is Berber and I put it in only three years ago and already looks awful).

So, of course when I saw the new line of Martha Stewart carpet at Home Depot, I knew I had to check it out.

Sidenote: I am an original Martha Stewart wannabe. I subscribed to her magazine while I was in college. It took me four days to make her gingerbread house with real sugar windows one Christmas and I coveted every issue of Martha Stewart Weddings until I actually had my own wedding (and I still sneak a peak of it now and again in the bookstore). I still love her ideas and everything about her, but I know that everyone else does too now – but I like to think I’m an original.

  1. Oh my gosh, our house flooded a few weeks ago, too. Sounds like y'all are making much faster progress. We are currently living in a hotel, with all of our belongings in storage. Our insurance company picked the contractor that will be doing everything (everything has to be gutted)-and so far they are aweful and haven't done anything! Best of luck to get all the repairs finished quickly. You are so right about how important it is to have insurance!!

  2. Yay, I'm glad it worked out so well! Pretty exciting getting new carpets :) p.s. where did you get your kitchen table?? we're looking for a fab round pedestal table for our kitchen!

  3. So glad you have insurance to take care of the flooding! Good luck finding a carpet!

I love to hear what you all think! Thanks for visiting and let me know you were here!
